# Gifts From the Dog (or Cat): What to Give “From” Your Pet

By Amy, Retro Reverence · Updated October 1, 2026

The best gift “from the dog” (or the cat) is one only that pet could give: **a custom portrait of them doing the thing they always do**, signed on the card with their name. It works for **Christmas, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day**, because the pet is the whole point.

Every scene for dogs (https://retroreverence.com/dog-portraits) and cats (https://retroreverence.com/cat-portraits) is made from your photo.

## Why do gifts from the pet work so well?

Every family has one person who signs the card from the dog. It is a small joke that everyone is in on, and it lets you say something warmer than you might say yourself.

A gift from the pet also solves the hardest part of shopping for a pet person. They already have the mug. What they do not have is their own dog, or their own cat, on the wall, doing the exact thing that made them laugh on a Tuesday.

## What makes a good gift from the dog?

Three things:

- **It is about the pet, not pets in general.** A generic paw print is fine. A portrait of their dog at the window is better.
- **It comes from the pet’s point of view.** The dog did not pick out a scarf. The dog would pick a portrait of the dog.
- **The card is signed by the pet.** The gift does half the work. The card does the rest.

## Christmas gifts from the dog or cat

Christmas is the easiest one, because pets already have opinions about Christmas.

- Night Watch (https://retroreverence.com/shop/custom-dog-portrait-dog-santa-cookies): a dog seated beside the cookies and milk left out for Santa, guarding them with total devotion. A gift from the dog that is also a confession.
- The Real Gift: a cat settled into a torn-open gift box, surrounded by shredded wrapping paper. The cat has always believed they were the present. Now it is official.

More holiday scenes live in Christmas pet portraits (https://retroreverence.com/christmas-pet-portraits). For Christmas delivery, order a custom digital portrait by **December 17** (it arrives by December 22), or by **December 21** with the Rush upgrade. Order a print or canvas by **December 5**.

## Birthday gift from the dog to mom (or dad)

Guest of Honor (https://retroreverence.com/shop/custom-dog-portrait-dog-birthday) shows a dog beside a birthday cake, wearing a small party hat. There is a cat version too, with the same cake and the same small hat.

It also works the other way round, for the pet’s own birthday or adoption day, as a gift from the whole family.

## Valentine’s gift from the dog

Valentine’s Day asks for something sweet without being syrupy. An everyday scene does that best: the spot on the couch, the middle of the bed, the window seat. The Incumbent shows a dog asleep on the good sofa. Quality Control shows a cat stretched out in the middle of a made bed. Both say “I love you, and I am not moving.”

## Mother’s Day gift from the dog (or cat)

For the mom who keeps plants alive in spite of the cat, The Horticulturist (https://retroreverence.com/shop/custom-cat-portrait-cat-on-windowsill) shows a cat sunning itself on a windowsill among terracotta pots, one paw resting on the basil pot. It is a Mother’s Day gift from the cat and an apology, all at once.

For a dog mom, Neighborhood Watch shows a dog with its paws on the windowsill, watching the street outside. It suits the mom who gets the full welcome home every single day.

## Gift for dad from the dog (Father’s Day)

Safety Inspector (https://retroreverence.com/shop/custom-dog-portrait-dog-grill-buddy) shows a dog gazing hopefully up at a smoking summer grill. For the dad whose dog has attended every cookout, just making sure nothing falls.

## What about a gift from the cat to owner?

Cats already give gifts. A single sock. A hair tie delivered to the bed at 3 a.m. Something from the garden that nobody asked for. A portrait of the cat is the upgrade: same devotion, far less cleanup.

The cat scenes cover windowsills, bookshelves, laundry piles and bathroom sinks, so there is almost certainly one that matches your cat’s favorite spot.

## What should the card say?

Short, in the pet’s voice, signed with their name. A few that work:

- “I picked this out myself. Love, Biscuit.”
- “Happy Mother’s Day. I still think the basil started it. Love, Olive.”
- “Merry Christmas. The cookies were already gone when I got there. Love, Moose.”

If the pet can “sign” with a paw print, even better. A little ink on the card goes a long way. Less on the carpet is ideal.

## How long does it take, and what does it cost?

A digital portrait costs $19 and arrives within 3 business days of receiving your photos. A fine art paper print starts at $59 and a gallery canvas at $95, with shipping included. Prints and canvases take about 1 to 2 weeks, because you approve a proof first.

Order from the product page, then upload your pet’s photos right in your order. If the gift is a surprise, ask a family member to send the original photo straight from their phone.

## Questions

What is a good gift from the dog to dad?

A portrait of the dog doing the thing dad always talks about: guarding the grill, riding shotgun, holding down the couch. Sign the card with the dog’s name. It is the one gift nobody else could give.

What can a cat give its owner?

Something better than the usual hair tie under the fridge. A portrait of the cat in their favorite spot, from a photo, signed from the cat, is a gift the whole house will understand.

How far ahead should I order a gift from the pet?

A digital portrait arrives within 3 business days of receiving your photos. A print or canvas takes about 1 to 2 weeks. For Christmas, order digital by December 17, or by December 21 with the Rush upgrade, and print or canvas by December 5.

What if we have more than one pet?

Each portrait stars one pet, so every pet can give their own gift. Two portraits hung side by side make a good pair, and nobody has to share the spotlight.
